How did I get from there to here? How did my husband and I decide, after living for 40+ years on Ontario, to pick up our family (some of it) and move 2500 km to Nova Scotia? It's a question my 9 year old is still asking, 2 weeks after having arrived.
He's a sensitive kid. I've often said that he takes after my dad. My dad was really nice, too nice sometimes. People would take advantage of him and he'd let them. I probably learned my conflict management skills (or lack thereof) from him. But my son? I hope he does better.
It was really a lifestyle choice. For the past 9 years, we had a hobby farm in Southern Ontario. We tried everything, horses, steers, pigs, ducks, geese, rabbits and multiple other varieties of birds. The longer we lived there, it seemed like our motivation was slowly sinking away. 3 years ago, we had no motivation what-so-ever. All the hobbies and interests we had when we moved in had just faded away. Our drive to increase our finances had gone with it. I was selling houses, enough to keep the bills paid, but not enough to get rid of the steadily rising consumer debt.
It's funny, but the whole immediate area around us was like that. The house across from us had one failed business under it's belt, and I'm not convinced that the current owners were doing all that well. The next house over had 2 failed marriages and a failed business, not to mention the house burning down and then the garage. The house one over from that had 4 failed marriages.
Our house had 3 failed businesses before us. Bad ju-ju? I think so.
So, my husband began to do research into ley-lines and dark water and poor energy. I had made attempts at feng shui, but didn't feel like I had any great effect. Hubby bought some dowsing rods and we were rather amazed with the results. It seemed like there was a lot of negative energy hitting the front corner of our house. We knew there was a lot of water underground there, and when the house across from us was built, our well began to test positive for e.coli. Was this dirty water the source of some of our ills? We had many of the signs of what they call geopathic stress (http://www.alivewater.net/geo/geostress.htm) , including not sleeping well, insects in the house and some of the others mentioned on other sites.
Hubby decided to take matters into his own hands. One of the ways to fix this problem is to drive a metal stake into the ground that will deflect the electro-magnetic energy away from the house. So he got himself a length of iron and drove it into the ground about 3 feet out from the corner of the house.
Now, I'm not an immediate believer in this sort of thing. I like to think that I have a healthy amount of skepticism, with an open mind. For the next 4 days, I felt like I was going to crawl out of my skin. I was going absolutely insane. I couldn't sleep at all, I couldn't sit down, I couldn't even begin to relax. I was a total mess. I finally told him to pull the damn thing out of the ground, which he did, and within a day I was back to my lethargy, but at least I could sit down for longer then a minute at a time.
More research ensued. Finally, we identified 9 individual streams seeming to come toward the house. Oddly enough, we both dowsed individually and drew our own maps, blind from the other. Our maps were 90% matches. We pegged all 9 streams. Over the next few months, our moods improved and we began to feel motivated again. Of course, by this time, we had our house on the market and we had no interest in busting our asses to try and stay in the property.
The decision had been made to move to Nova Scotia.
Over the 9 years that we lived in that farm, we had visited NS 3 times. Each time, we had looked at property, and considered a move. We always returned home feeling energized, creative, motivated and rejuvenated. After being home for a week, all that would get sucked out of us.
Finally, after 1.5 years on the market, the farm sold. Just before the announcements of a global economic recession, and the announcement of the closure of a major local employer. Thank the Goddess. We were free.
So, we travelled to NS and didn't find our dream property. We decided to take a rental (sight unseen) from a property management company, while we decide exactly where we want to be.
The rentals okay, other then the rust in the water that the landlord is getting fixed.
I do want to get the kids settled into a home rather then a temporary stop-gap. They need the solidity of a home and friends.
